The sound

Caverns, Danko Jones and Clutch
People’s Court, April 11

A night filled with straight up, balls-to-the-walls rock and roll had the crowd at People’s Court pumping their fists and singing along to the powerhouse known as Clutch. The wickedly spastic instrumentals of Caverns opened the show. The group’s ever-growing songs slowly built over time. The trio works well, but a fourth member could round out the group’s sound and add to their almost epic levels. Still, they impressed. Up next were the Canadians, Danko Jones (named after their frontman). The trio shredded through their first set in Des Moines. Like Clutch, Danko Jones has been able to build a strong following without entering too far into the mainstream, and their live set shows why. Tearing through a number of songs, including “I Think Bad Thoughts,” “Bring on the Mountain,” “Rock Shit Hot” and “Sugar High,” the band had the audience eating out of its hands. The raucous “Forget My Name” got the crowd really going, especially two lovely ladies in the front row who decided to flash their “assests” at Danko. Closing the show like a thunderous muscle car was Clutch. The crowd went nuts as these road warriors blasted through a set including “Pure Rock Fury,” “Slow Hole to China,” “Mice And Gods,” “50K Unstoppable Watts” and the show-closing “Spacegrass.” Clutch are veteran musicians and know how to rock a crowd. No gimmicks or flash needed, just four dudes who kick you in the face with some rocking tunes. CV — Jared Curtis
