Walter Trout plays at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 8 at Blues on Grand. Admission is $15. The club’s weekly jam will follow the show.

Ten local bands compete in two of the three preliminary rounds of the 2010 Iowa Blues Challenge, beginning this week. The first round will be held Thursday, April 8 at Zimm’s Food & Spirits at 7:30 p.m. Participants include The Operators, Brad “BeBad” McCloud & His Case of the Blues, The Jacob Lee Band, Bella Soul Blues Revolution featuring Tina Haase Findlay and the Bob Pace Band featuring Steve E. George. The second round will be held Thursday, April 15 at Blues on Grand at 7:30 p.m. and will include performances by Cousins of the Blues, Willie Mac’s Blues Attack, The Barons of the Blues, Stoney Ground and Trouble No More. Two bands from each Des Moines round will compete with a band from the Quad Cities at the finals on May 22 at the Downtown Marriott.

Singer-violinist-rocker Bitch plays Friday, April 9 at 7 p.m. at the Des Moines Social Club. Admission is $10.

On April 9, at 10 a.m., members of the Des Moines Music Coalition, www.desmoinesmc.com, will be offered the first chance at tickets for the 80/35 music festival, July 3-4. General public tickets go on sale Monday, April 12, at 10 a.m. A limited number of early bird tickets, $29 for a two-day pass and $125 for VIP tickets, are available until they sell out. Regular tickets are $40 for a two day and $175 for VIP. Tickets are available at www.midwestix.com. Bands will begin being announced on April 19.

Ten bands will compete for studio recording time and other prizes in the “Iowa’s Got Rockers” event on Saturday, April 10 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. to close at the House of Bricks. Admission is $7. Proceeds benefit Lifeline Resources family counseling.

The Des Moines Symphony hosts a performance by the Magic Circle Mime Co. for its Lollipops Family Concert on Saturday, April 10 at 11 a.m. at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines. Tickets are $15 or $40 for a family four-pack through Ticketmaster.

Taz and “Freight Train” Frank will perform Sunday, April 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Des Moines Botanical Center. Admission is $5.

Electronica’s Pnuma Trio performs Sunday, April 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 through Midwestix.

Clutch, Danko Jones and Caverns play on Sunday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at People’s Court. Tickets are $19 through Midwestix.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pre-Tax Day Charity Bash will be held on Tuesday, April 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Miss Kitty’s in Clive and will include performances by Matt Woods and The Thunderbolts and Richard Arndt. Admission is $5 and includes live music, a free dinner and a chance to bid on several items in a live and silent auction. All donations are tax deductible.

Mimicking Birds and Frontier Ruckus play on April 29 at the Vaudeville Mews at 5 p.m. Tickets are $8.

The Audition and The Bigger Lights perform on May 6 at 5 p.m. at the House of Bricks. Tickets are $11.

Fight Fair, Romance on a Rocketship and Kill Paradise perform at 4 p.m. on May 30 at the Vaudeville Mews. Tickets are $10 through Midwestix.

Country music veterans Ronnie Milsap and the Oak Ridge Boys perform at Prairie Meadows’ Events Center on June 24 at 7 p.m. Tickets, $29-$74, are on sale through Ticketmaster. CV
