CONCERT REVIEW
Bright Giant, Rehab and Uncle Kracker
March 18, People’s Court
The crowd at the Uncle Kracker show was one of the weirdest mix of people I have ever experienced in my 15 years of attending concerts. Little kids mingled with middle-aged folks trying to be hip, along with teenagers still wearing puka shell necklaces and trucker hats. But with the pop radio friendly sounds of both Rehab and Uncle Kracker, it was a match made in trendy music heaven. Bright Giant, formerly The Josh Davis Band, opened the show, but had me asking, “Why?” Their straightforward rock sound was immensely better than what followed. Rehab gained success with their bland hit “Bartender Song.” Their mix of rap, pop, folk and rock, entertained the young kids and had the older crowd — who I’m guessing hear these songs every day on radio to and from work — also singing along. Closing the show was Uncle Kracker, which has changed quite a bit since the days behind the ones and twos for Kid Rock’s Twisted Brown Trucker Band. His newer sounds offer a country twanged, southern rock vibe, and the crowd ate it up. At one point in the show, Uncle Kracker stated, “I see a lot of old people in the audience” and gave a shout out to the chaperones, dedicating his cover of “Drift Away” to them. His comment and the stiff swaying audience summed up the docile show perfectly. CV — Jared Curtis
