CONCERT REVIEW

Animal Mothers, The Jitz, Wolves in the Attic and Mondo Drag
March 11, Vaudeville Mews

Vaudeville Mews had a good crowd on a Thursday night, offering four bands including three locals and Mondo Drag, straight from the Quad Cities. I saw Mondo Drag open for Pentagram earlier this year and was blown away by their psychedelic, stoner rock sound. I knew I had to catch their return. Animal Mothers opened the show with a short and heavy set. Next up was good time party rockers The Jitz. The trio was on point as they chugged through a set filled with songs about drinking and chicks. Led by frontman Mike Clabaugh, The Jitz raucous sound oozed a type of “booze and cigs” swagger that is hard to come by. Following them was Wolves in the Attic. The foursome roared through a loud set of precise songs with good melodies hidden under all the feedback. The band’s set grew on me, and I look forward to future exposures. Taking the stage last was Mondo Drag, which thoroughly impressed. Each member adds an important piece to the band’s sound, but drummer/vocalist Johnnie Cluney leads the charge, bashing his drums like a madman. Opening with the title track of their album, “New Rituals,” the band maneuvered the crowd on a trip through peaks and valleys with “Serpent Shake,” “Love Me (Like A Stranger)” and my favorite, “Tallest Tale.” The lucky fans in attendance went on a psychedelic musical journey like no other.
