CONCERT REVIEW
Mindrite, Adelitas Way and Halestorm
March 5, People’s Court
Going into this show, I had only heard Halestorm’s single “I Get Off.” I was intrigued by the skills and look of frontwoman Lizzy Hale and eager to check them out. People’s Court was packed to the gills for an early all-ages show, which changed venues after the band quickly sold out The House of Bricks. The venue had two events booked for the same night, so Mindrite took the stage a little after 5 p.m. and Adelitas Way followed soon after. The problem — People’s had the show listed as starting at 6 p.m., so I was surprised to show up and find both bands had already played. Regardless, the crowd was there for Halestorm. Taking the stage in a white hooded medieval coat, Hale brought the crowd alive. Along with her band — brother and drummer Arejay Hale, guitarist Joe Hottinger and bassist Josh Smith — the foursome tore through a set filled with good time rockers, “I Get Off” and an unexpected acoustic break for “I’m not an angel.” Hale told numerous stories between songs, saying Des Moines is “a huge part of our history” and informing fans that because of a show at the Val Air Ballroom in 2006, they sold enough CDs to enter the studio. A mid set drum solo energized the crowd with the three other members joining Arejay on trash cans at the end. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but I left a Halestorm fan. CV — Jared Curtis
