Readers are tough on the Register

The Feb. 18 Des Moines Register revealed itself as the Sarah Palin of Iowa print journalism. The Opinion page ran a plea by a local resident to reject the voices of hatred in political discourse. The editors underscored his point with a picture of an angry Tea Party poster showing us President Obama done up in full Marxist military drag with a prominent hammer and sickle insignia. Faux Cyrillic lettering and Moscow’s red square skyline reinforced up the visuals.

Then, the Register’s Opinion page pharaoh captioned the uniformed Obama as a Nazi. When did Nazi fascists ever dress like Communist reds or run Moscow? If The Des Moines Register can’t distinguish between be the two greatest killing machine movements in the 20th and 21st centuries, what else don’t they know? Is any story filled with facts or is the paper filled with weasel word guesses?

Let’s laugh again
Ever since Dave Berry retired, Rob Borsellino passed away and Brian Duffy got fired, gloom has settled over The Des Moines Register like a London fog. The 19th century was graced with Mark Twain. During the Great Depression, Will Rogers bolstered the spirits of newspaper readers. More recently, Erma Bombeck, Mike Royko and Molly Ivins were featured. Isn’t there anybody in syndication or in journalism school blessed with the humor gene? Life is real and life is earnest, but we all need to laugh sometimes.

Corrections: In our last issue (“Greatest Poll on Earth,” Feb. 18), we mistakenly left out the “Best Hardware Store” category — congratulations to the winner, Miller’s Hardware, and to the runner-ups, Ace Hardware and True Value. In the “Best Annual Tent/Block Party” category we mistakenly listed 515 Alive as a runner-up, when the actual runner-up was the Oktoberfest event. And we listed the wrong address for “Best Bridal Shop” winners, Weddings By Design. Their address is 2020 Grand Ave., West Des Moines, 222-9662. CV
