Matt Anthoney
“Waiting For the Opening”
Independent release

Ames-based singer-songwriter Matt Anthoney apparently has always liked classical music, dating back to his high school days growing up in rural Iowa where he began writing a cappella tunes, all the way through his days in college where he earned a degree in music and released two a cappella albums. His love of Italian Madrigals and Take 6, mixed with pop music, takes flight on his new album, “Waiting For the Opening,” which is comprised of 10 original, soft-pop songs that Anthoney classifies as “classipop.” From the opening title track, to “Your Last Idea,” to the closing number “I’d Give Anything,” Anthoney demonstrates an ability to string together unspoiled melodies with affectionate vocals, piano and drums (recorded in his apartment) as though he were channeling the spirits of Bela Bartok and Harry Nilsson in search of perfect new modern art pop songs. Luther Allison
“Songs From the Road”
Ruf Records

I will forever remember the concerts that I saw Luther Allison perform from 1995 to 1997 during his triumphant “comeback” as arguably the most electrifying performances of my lifetime. From Chicago, to Helena, to his final show in Iowa in Iowa City (May 1997), each one bares sweet memories of a sweat-drenched marathon that left Allison and his audience physically, emotionally and spiritually drained, but uplifted. “Songs From the Road,” a combination CD/DVD recorded live in Montreal on July 4, 1997, reminds me of what made Allison great. It also reminds me how much I miss him. Filmed live just four days before Allison was diagnosed with terminal cancer which took his life one month later, “Songs From the Road” might not capture Allison at the absolute height of his powers, but demonstrate his ability to stir your soul with songs like “Cherry Red Wine,” “Serious” and “Move From the Hood,” even at death’s door.
