CONCERT REVIEW
Katie Herzig and Brandi Carlile
Jan. 20, Hoyt Sherman Place
I’m going to go ahead and apologize to any other bands I cover the rest of this winter. Over the past month and a half, the shows I’ve reviewed have fallen on nights with snowstorms, below-zero temperatures and, as in the case with last week’s show, an ice storm. A large but docile crowd packed the historic Hoyt Sherman Place on an icy night for two talented singer-songwriters, Katie Herzig and Brandi Carlile. Herzig took the stage first, warming up the crowd with her pop-laced folk tunes. Her songs ranged from dreamlike ditties to charged sing-a-longs. “Hologram,” stuck with me, but it was “Sweeter Then This,” which has apparently appeared on a few episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy,” that was the best I heard the entire night. Fans eagerly awaited the return of Brandi Carlile (who sold out her last appearance at Hoyt) and were not disappointed. Carlile and her band crowded a lone mic in the middle of the floor and introduced themselves with a haunting a cappella tune. Carlile used something more artists should take advantage of — the amazing acoustics of Hoyt Sherman. Standing at the front of the stage with no amps or mics, Carlile, with her guitarist and bass player, soared with a completely unplugged tune. Carlile continued with an impressive set, but there was something so beautiful about that unplugged moment that I wish had lasted the entire night. CV — Jared Curtis
