what's inside

Could it be?

We have all been there. A speeding fire truck rushes by and heads toward your neighborhood. An ambulance with lights flashing pulls into your place of work. The newscaster tells of an unidentified person in your hometown who died in a tragic accident. We see or hear these of these situations, and we fear for the worst, wondering if those affected are loved ones.

The recent earthquake in Haiti left people around the globe in fear for their family and friends. With a confirmed 150,000 death toll and estimates of 200,000, we understand why.

So when we heard Des Moines resident Anne Mathey’s story of her father in Haiti and the ordeal she and her mother went through, we decided to share the story with you. Her firsthand experiences of Haiti and the many stories of her father’s travels there provide her with a perspective few of us can have. But we all can relate to the emptiness and sorrow brought about from death or near-death experiences of those we love.

Mathey’s story is touching, intriguing and insightful, and we are pleased to share it with you as this week’s cover story.

Thanks for reading. CV
