Governor’s race should be a hoot
”Civic Skinny” is the best part of your publication — keep those juicy tidbits coming. That e-mail you mentioned (“Civic Skinny,” Jan. 14) at the end of last week’s column, sounds like a idea put out by someone testing the waters on an idea (Chet isn’t getting cold feet, is he?). In any case, this governor’s race should be a hoot. If the GOP candidates tear each other to shreds, and judging by the tenacity of the remaining contenders, they just might, then Gov. Culver will have a much easier time getting re-elected (no matter what Jonathan Narcisse says or does). And if he can show he is producing more jobs and prosperity, then he should have an easy time of it. The hubris of a one-time four-term governor to quit a high-paying job to come back in, thinking he can do better, is almost as laughable as a northwestern-Iowa bumpkin wanting to legislate morality to the state. Christopher Rants will keep ranting as well, so this should be a good show. Hope someone has an extra mop for all the blood.

Why are bank bigwigs receiving bonuses?
It’s hard to imagine a story as incredible as this — the same big banks and financial institutions that created the devastating foreclosure crisis, sent our economy into a deep recession, needed hundreds of billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded bailouts, and then lobbied Congress to kill the best policy solution available to prevent foreclosures from ravaging our communities — are now back to raking in billions in profits and starting to announce huge profits and lavish bonuses.

And now it sounds like big banks might get their way with no Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) to protect everyday Americans from predatory practices. Iowans are frustrated with politics as usual. Enough is enough. Passing legislation like CFPA is an opportunity for our legislators to show us whose side they’re on — everyday people instead of corporate power.
