what's inside

By Shane Goodman Publisher/Editor

Bands, basketball, bacon and more
With our summer and fall arts and entertainment guides being some of our most popular issues of the year, we were feeling a bit guilty about leaving winter out of the mix. So last year we made our first effort at compiling a list of winter activities to get you out of the house and involved in local events.

You are right. There’s not as much to do in central Iowa in the winter as there is in the warmer months. But once you take a closer look, you might be surprised.

The concert venues are strong with local and national talent hitting the scene. Art shows and exhibitions are prevalent, and local theater provides a warm and entertaining refuge from the outside elements. Who doesn’t enjoy a hot tub of popcorn and a good film in the winter months? If sports are more your thing, then you will be pleased to know that the state basketball tournaments are near. Or avoid the kids and attend a Barnstormers or Energy game. Better yet, don your gear and get involved in the Des Moines Winter Games. And then there’s bacon — oh yes, bacon — at the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival.

So set your excuses aside, put down the remote control and take advantage of all that central Iowa has to offer.

Thanks for reading. CV
