Maddy’s Again Neighborhood Pub & Grill
West Des Moines’ newest neighborhood bar

The old saying, “you don’t know what you got until it’s gone” has affected numerous people in different ways. Brian Maddy is one of those people. After closing Maddy’s Place on Grand Avenue a few years ago, he went looking for other ventures. Now he has returned with the name that started it all and a bar that is bigger and better.

“I figured I’d bring the name because the bar did so well at its old location,” said Maddy. “I was looking for a new spot and found this place. It’s a great location for a neighborhood bar.”

The former location of Mugs Pub & Grub, Maddy has given the building a facelift. He split the building into separate rooms, a bar and a dining room, which allows families to enjoy lunch or dinner while bar patrons can relax in the bar.

“The biggest complaint about the set-up before was that kids were in the bar late night eating, since it was one big room,” he said. “So I knew the first thing I needed to do was split the two rooms up.”

Maddy wants people to know his establishment is kid friendly. It has a few video games and a claw machine in the dinning room and hosts kid’s karaoke Monday and Tuesday nights from 6 to 8 p.m. The menu, which has a wide variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, wraps, pastas and appetizers, also has an extensive kid’s section. They also feature daily lunch and dinner specials.

“We took a unique approach to our menu, and it is very kid friendly,” he said. “It’s not your average bar-type food.”

Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m., and Sundays from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. Patrons receive a token when they buy a drink (think a two-for-one special) and then can use the token for their next drink or bring it back on another occasion (except pitchers). The bar also hosts karaoke for adults Wednesday through Saturday, and on Sunday patrons can enjoy $3 big mugs (32 oz.) and $2 drink specials on most everything else.

“We offer a great Happy Hour special,” Maddy said.

Maddy’s prides themselves on their giant pitchers ($16). The blender-looking tower holds nine beers and has an ice tube that sits in the middle, keeping the beer ice cold and a tapper on the bottom for easy pour.

“The pitchers have gone over very well,” he said. “It allows people to drink at their own pace without worrying about the beer getting warm.”

Check out the bar’s Web site for details on an upcoming grand opening celebration. They also will also host a Super Bowl party with drink and food specials.

“We already have a lot of regulars, and the former customers who have returned are really happy with the redesign,” Maddy said.

Although the bar has been open for less than a month, new customers and regulars of the old establishment are stopping in every day.

“We offer a comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere with good service and prices,” he said. “We have a wide variety of customers, and everyone’s welcome no matter if you’re starting your night with us or ending it here.” CV
