Fleur Cinema to show short films
The Iowa Environmental Council, in partnership with Practical Farmers of Iowa, will show a screening of “King Corn” and “Big River: A King Corn Companion” on Thursday, Jan. 7 at the Fleur Cinema, 4545 Fleur Drive. A special reception will be held at 6 p.m. with the films to follow at 7 and 8 p.m. Filmmaker Aaron Wolf will host a short question and answer session after the films. Admission is $20, and proceeds from the screening will benefit the Iowa Environmental Council and Practical Farmers of Iowa.

 

Talk politics at DMSC
The Greater Des Moines Partnership and Affiliate Chambers will have its Legislative Opening Night Reception on Monday, Jan. 11 at the Des Moines Social Club, 1408 Locust St. The event runs from 5 to 7 p.m., and guests will have the opportunity to meet state legislators and enjoy food from restaurants and vendors from around the metro. Bite into Beast Feast
Stoney Creek Inn, 5291 Stoney Creek Court in Johnston, will host the 2009 Beast Feast on Jan. 22 to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Outdoors Dan, host of “Outdoors Traditions TV” and “Outdoors Dan Radio,” will be the emcee for the evening. The evening begins with a silent auction at 6:30 p.m. and a wild game buffet dinner, including pheasant, bear, venison and turkey will follow at 7 p.m. All proceeds from the event will be used for cancer research, patient education and financial services in Iowa. Tickets are $25, and children ages 15 and under are $10. Tickets may be purchased at the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 8033 University Blvd., Ste. A or call 270-6169. Donate items to shelter
Salon TEC, 1234 Grand Ave., is collecting donations for the “Children’s and Battered Women’s Shelter” through Monday, Jan. 11. The Shelter is in need of diapers, baby wipes, blankets, pillows, towels, washcloths and personal items, such as shampoo and conditioner.
