Hugh’s Jungle Room
“You’ll never walk alone” at this unique lounge

Everyone likes taking trips down memory lane, looking at old photos or listening to music from a past era. But when patrons stroll through the doors of Hugh’s Jungle Room — inspired by Elvis Presley’s famed Jungle Room at Graceland and the music and films of the era — they’ll be whisked away to a time when life was simpler, and the party never stopped.

“I knew when we opened (2005), I wanted a different type of place,” said owner Hugh Duoblys, a veteran bartender of the local nightlife scene. “I didn’t want a pool hall or a sports bar. I wanted a comfortable neighborhood type place. We play a lot of music from the ’50s to the ’70s, but we don’t limit ourselves to those eras.”

The bar is unique, covered in a plethora of Elvis Presley photos and flags, as well as other celebrity memorabilia of the time including Marilyn Monroe and Roy Orbison. Much like Elvis’ jungle room, Hugh’s has a tropical vibe and a tiger skin rug.

“I am a fan of the King, but I’m also a fan of that era,” he says. “My customers bring me pictures and stuff all the time. A lot of times, people will come in and take a few minutes just to look around before they even order anything.”

Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and offers patrons 75 cents off all drinks. Hugh’s changes its nightly specials monthly; January offers $5 pitchers as well as $2.25 domestic draws and wells, Sunday through Wednesday. If you want to sing your heart out, step up on Hugh’s stage and belt out a tune. Karaoke happens Tuesday through Saturday from 9 p.m. to close. While there, try the Bird of Paradise — a creamy, yet tropical drink — or stop in Friday and Saturday for Jell-O shots.

“We have a great crowd for karaoke. Everyone gets a couple of drinks in them and are ready to exploit themselves,” he laughs.

In 2010, Hugh’s Jungle Room will be moving and reopening in a new location (TBA). But don’t fret; they are not moving far.

“We’re staying close to the area,” he said. “But we are coming back bigger and better.”

Celebrate the new decade in style at Hugh’s Jungle Room 5th Annual New Year’s Party. Patrons can enjoy drink specials, karaoke, party favors and a champagne toast at midnight.

“We always have a fun time on New Year’s Eve,” he said. “It’s a great way to give back to our customers.”

If you’re a fan of The King or not, Hugh’s Jungle Room is a one-of-a-kind-place.

“We offer a safe atmosphere and make our customers feel like family,” Duoblys said. “We have one of the best staffs in town. So no matter what night you stop, you’re going to have fun.” CV
