‘Star Trek’

Directed by J.J. Abrams
Rated PG-13, 127 minutes

Finally (released to theaters in May) we get one of the best films of the year on DVD. I was never a fan of the “Star Trek” series, but I trusted director J.J. Abrams, especially after he melted my mind with “Lost.” “Star Trek” is a thrill ride, filled with amazing visuals, plenty of action and an outstanding story. Simon Pegg stole every scene as Scotty; Zachary Quinto was perfectly cast as Spock; Chris Pine excelled as a young, cocky James T. Kirk; and Anton Yelchin shined in the film’s climax as Chekov. Add in a super-hot, half-naked green chick (Rachel Nichols), and Abrams has created the perfect film to not only appease long-time fans, but also draw in new fans both young and old. CV

‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn

Directed by Nicholas Meyer
1982, Rated PG, 116 minutes

Let me start this review by letting you know that I hate “Star Trek.” It was too nerdy and never had enough action to keep me entertained. But with my enjoyment of J.J. Abrams “Star Trek,” I decided to go back. Out of all the films, the one that stuck with me was “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn.” And truthfully, it wasn’t even the Starship Enterprise crew that kept me smiling; it was the delightfully cheesy, yet extremely entertaining performance of Mr. Roarke himself, Ricardo Montalban. As James T. Kirk’s (William Shatner) most famous nemesis, Khan, Montalbon reveled in the character. Who could forget his ripped torso, his ridiculously feathered gray hair, and him telling Kirk, “Revenge is a dish that is best served cold.” Montalban is so good, viewers will be yelling, “KHAAANNNN!” long after the credits roll.
