The Des Moines Symphony hosts “Symphony with a Twist,” a free after-hours event at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 on the fourth floor of The Temple for Performing Arts. The casual event is designed to attract young concert-goers and includes an open rehearsal of the symphony as well as a cash bar and appetizers. Call 280-4011.
Fans of local pop-punk rockers The Horseshoe Spatulas won’t want to miss the band’s CD release show on Friday, Nov. 13 at the Vaudeville Mews. It is the band’s last show on the books for the time being as the group’s drummer is moving to New York City.
The “Awake and Alive Tour” featuring popular Christian rock band Skillet stops in Ames for a concert at Stephens Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. Special guests include Hawk Nelson, Decyfer Down and The Letter Black. Tickets are $22.50 in advance through Ticketmaster or the box office and $25 the day of the show.
The Civic Music Association will host a concert by the renowned Vienna Boys Choir at Drake University’s Sheslow Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. The choir is one of the oldest boy’s choirs not associated with a church or college and was founded by Emperor Maximilian in the 15th Century. Tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for students. A free pre-concert performance by the Iowa Youth Chrous will be held in Levitt Hall at 6:15 p.m. Call 280-4020.
Rock band Person L, fronted by Kenneth Vasoli, former singer for The Starting Line, brings it two drummers and crew to town for an all-ages show on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 5:30 p.m. Admission is $10. John Nolan of Straylight Run, Brian Bonz and Here’s My Chance will open the show.
Guitar Center is hosting a food drive through Nov. 15 where customers who donate a non-perishable food item in exchange will receive a 10 percent discount coupon for their next purchase.
The PacTour featuring Saosin, P.O.S., Innerpartysystem and Eye Alaska, rolls into People’s Court on Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance through IowaTix or $17 at the door.
Heartland rocker Will Hoge, on tour promoting his new album “The Wreckage,” which was delayed for almost a year by Hoge’s near-fatal traffic accident, performs Tuesday, Nov. 17 at 8 p.m. at the Maintenance Shop in Ames. Tickets are $10 for students and $13 for the public.
The “Midweek Music Series” hosted by St. John’s Lutheran Church, 600 6th Ave., continues its weekly, 25-minute, noontime concerts on Wednesdays. This month’s artists include David Liljedahl and David Piersel (Nov. 18) and Leah McIntire (Nov. 25).
The Crossroads Entertainment and Art Experience, a two-day music and art showcase held throughout various venues in downtown Des Moines, returns Dec. 3-4. This year’s music showcase on Dec. 4 at the Des Moines Social Club will include performances by Brother Trucker, Cashes Rivers, The Anytime, DD Sparks, Alexis Stevens, The Speedbumps, Giano, Mary McAdams, Modoc and The Magazines.
