what's inside

Straight outta Des Moines

Iowa. White guys. Hip-hop. It’s an unlikely mix, yes, but Central Standard Records is proving that their Des Moines-based label is for real. Founders Joe Williams, Luke Driscoll, AKA Aeon Grey and Mindy Hoskin-Driscoll have heard the criticism before, but they continue to expand the local scene and are creating an awareness for hip-hop that has not been seen to this degree locally. Jared Curtis interviews the players and highlights the projects they will be releasing in 2010.

Jim Duncan also tells us why Smokey Row is wowing Sherman Hill in “Food Dude,” and Herb Strentz explains why the “We-don’t-get-no-respect-chorus” for the Iowa Hawkeyes is off key. Doug Burns shares how low voter turnout opens doors for city hall hijackings in “Political Mercury.”

Read from Jared Curtis how area brewers learned from George Reisch, Anheuser-Busch’s head brewmaster in this week’s “Belly Up.”

Kristin Hannah shares her thoughts on “Firefly Lane” in our book review, while Jared Curtis reviews the critically-acclaimed family film “Up.”

Learn why Leisha Barcus hangs up, The Des Moines Register screws up and IPERS is down in “Civic Skinny.” And Matt Miller tells us all about the Des Moines Dirty Duathlon in “Locker Room.”

All this and much more for your reading pleasure in this week’s Cityview. CV
