The NFL season is already half over. The excitement, drama and build-up have culminated into a fast-paced season with most teams already eliminated from any real chance of contention.
The most interesting happening this last week occurred off the field when the Kansas City Chiefs caved to public opinion — started by a guy from Des Moines, oddly enough — to can Larry Johnson, sending him packing for the time being until another team scoops him up and uses him to demolish the Chiefs. GameDay can’t believe Kansas City decided to take the salary cap hit by releasing L.J. outright during a season that is already over and allowing any team the option to sign him. Stupid. Scott Pioli and Todd Haley needed to take a page from the inter-division rival Denver Broncos and hold him out or trade him outright. Who cares if you end up trading him for the towel boy in Detroit? You could use a better towel boy, or anybody else for that matter. The sad thing is L.J. will still get paid a lot better than any towel boy, courtesy of Kansas City. But the fans can rejoice, as next year’s Chiefs Media Guide won’t have the line showing Johnson as the Chiefs all-time rushing leader. That’s a relief, huh? Buffalo fans are laughing right now, as their media guide still shows one O.J. “the glove didn’t fit” Simpson as theirs.
Back to reality. A few games of interest still exist, as we start to go down the stretch. Division leaders Minnesota and New Orleans have real barn burners this week, playing Detroit and St. Louis respectively. GameDay would like to think they’re both safe picks. But the big game of the week is the East Coast media’s love affair of Brady vs. Manning, Pats vs. Colts, or as GameDay likes to refer to it — the “how-in-the-hell-do-these-two-immobile-white quarterbacks-keep-making-those-plays” game. GameDay takes the Colts at home.
