‘Up’

Directed by
Pete Docter and Bob Peterson
Rated PG, 96 minutes

“Up” received such critical praise, I figured I’d have to watch it. I’m glad I did, because this movie has one of the sweetest on-screen romances I’ve seen this year. We meet little Carl Fredrickson (voiced by Ed Asner), who is at the movies watching his favorite explorer, Charles Muntz. Carl soon meets a toothless girl named Ellie, who also is a fan of Muntz, and the two become inseparable. They grow up, get married and plan on visiting Paradise Falls, which is where Muntz headed on his last adventure. But soon the couple grows old and before they can make their trip, tragedy strikes, which leads to Carl’s adventure. “Up” is a great family film, but for adults, the perfection lies in the first 15 minutes, leaving the rest feeling like child’s play. ‘The Princess Bride”

Directed By
Rob Reiner
1987, Rated PG, 98 minutes

“The Princess Bride” is one of the purest love stories ever told. Peter Falk narrates the story of Princess Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn) and her soul mate Westley (Cary Elwes) to his sick grandson (Fred Savage). The story takes place in a magical land where Westley and Buttercup first meet and fall in love. Soon they are divided, and Buttercup is on her way to becoming a princess. But Westley returns and makes a claim for the love of his life. After he defeats a gang of thieves who steal the princess, Buttercup is again taken away and Westley is left for dead. But amazed that he defeated them, Westley’s former enemies, Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin) and Fezzik (Andre the Giant), nurse him back to health, and the three of them storm the castle to save Princess Buttercup. “The Princess Bride” not only entertains but also shows the true meaning of eternal love.
