The crowning will have to wait
Terry Branstad’s eventual, and official, jump into the governor’s race will hardly be breaking news when it happens, as any Iowan who hasn’t been fast asleep for the past three months now assumes the former GOP leader will run. But Branstad won’t receive an immediate coronation in Iowa, at least not if the social conservative movement in the Republican party and stone thrower Bob Vander Plaats have anything to say about it. In this week’s cover story, freelance reporter Doug Burns shares insight into the minds of key Republicans and raises questions about how the party would move forward with a leader from the past.
Jared Curtis alsotakes us to Heroes, a new bar located in downtown Des Moines, in “Belly Up,” and Jim Duncan critiques The Brickhouse American Grille, the new restaurant in the old Cheddar’s location in Clive, in “Food Dude.” And Matt Miller takes a look at an area juggling club in “Locker Room.”
Darren Tromblay caught up with rockers Tesla at the Val Air, shaking windows on the west side of Des Moines. See those photos and ones from the Sledd and Matisyahu concerts in “The Sound.” Jared Curtis also previews upcoming theatrical shows in “Center Stage,” while Kent Carlson offers our country’s prescription for failure in our guest commentary.
And finally, if you are looking for the place to have your company holiday party, the Cityview staff offers local ideas to please the pickiest employees in our “Holiday Party Planning Guide.”
All this and more in this week’s Cityview. Thanks for reading. CV
