Sink buckets for a scare

The 16th annual Drake University Community Halloween Hoops ShootOut will be held Thursday, Oct. 29 at Drake’s Bell Center, 1421 27th St. The free event begins at 6 p.m. and is open to children ages 3 to 12. Benefit set for DMARC Food Pantry

The Sherman Hill Neighborhood will host the second annual Halloween on the Hill on Saturday, Oct. 31. The event runs form 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and will benefit the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry. Participants are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items at Smokey Row, 1910 Cottage Grove Ave., then drive or walk through the neighborhood on the haunted night. Call 710-8958.

 

Don’t become delinquent

The Polk County Treasurer offers a new “delinquent” vehicle tag renewal service at www.iowataxandtags.gov. Vehicle tags that became “delinquent” on or after Aug. 1 can be renewed, but tags prior to Aug. 1 do not qualify for online renewal. Call 286-2036.

 

Manage your money

Iowans for Social and Economic Development will continue to host its money workshop at the Forest Avenue Library, 1326 Forest Ave., on Monday evenings through Nov. 23. The workshop runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and shows participants how to open and manage bank accounts, understand credit and reports, organize financial records, understand consumer rights and save money. MIR seeking players, refs

The Mid Iowa Rollers’ (MIR) season may be over, but the team is still practicing and recruiting for 2010. Women must be 18 years or older and any skating level is welcome. Practices are Tuesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. at Skate West, 2019 Grand Ave., and cost is $5 per practice. The team is looking for referees, who can be male or female, but must be 18 years or older.
