Des Moines Police Oct. 16-20
Oct. 16, 2:20 a.m.
Simple assault in the 1000 block of 21st Street. Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who stated that she was staying overnight and helping to clean up the suspect’s apartment after police raided it. The victim said the suspect came to the apartment and asked what she was doing. The suspect told the victim to get out and grabbed the victim by the hair and punched her in the face several times. The victim escaped and flagged down a passing car and called police. Officers were unable to locate the suspect.
Oct. 17 and 18, 11:55 p.m. to 12:35 a.m.
Burglary in the 4500 block of 50th Street. Upon arrival, the victim stated that she noticed that several of her necklaces and her engagement ring were missing from her jewelry box. Upon further investigation, she also noticed that a bag containing digital cameras and a video camera, valued at $200, were missing along with a red bag that contained the contents of their safety deposit box. The victim believes the suspect(s) may have entered through the garage door since there we no signs of forced entry. No suspect(s) at this time.
Oct. 20, 11:44 p.m.
Assault with a weapon in the 1200 block of 6th Avenue. Officers were dispatched on a fight, and, upon arrival, found the victim in the parking lot holding his left arm. The victim stated that a black male came and struck him over the head with a metal pole. The suspect then ran north on 6th Avenue. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. Busted
Name: Matthew Adam Cornejo
The story: Officers were holding the perimeter of a vehicular death in the 1100 block of Army Post Road when they say that Cornejo began walking toward the perimeter tape yelling “Fuck the police” and “Fucking police.” Officers gave several orders for Cornejo, who was being held back by his friends, to leave the scene. Cornejo broke free and yelled, “Fuck you” several times and chest bumped a police officer. Officers tried apprehending the suspect, but he resisted by placing his hands underneath his body. Cornejo also kicked two officers. Cornejo was arrested and taken to the Polk County Jail and charged with assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.
