‘Trick ’r Treat’
Directed by Michael Dougherty
Rated R, 82 minutes

One of the best and most original horror films I’ve seen in a while, “Trick ’r Treat” is a must own for any scary movie fan. Reminiscent to the classic “Creepshow” films, “Trick ’r Treat” follows a number of characters whose stories intertwine, including a wife who hates the holiday, a husband who loves it, a group of kids who play a mean trick on an occult obsessed girl, a principal who moonlights as a serial killer, a bitter old man (Brian Cox) who has a dark past, and a group of women who stroll into town looking for more than just a party. Every story works, but the one involving the kids and the old man is the best. “Trick ’r Treat” is immensely entertaining and is the perfect film to drum up scares this Halloween. CV

‘Creepshow 2’
Directed by Michael Gornick
1987, Rated R, 92 minutes

A follow up to the extremely successful and entertaining 1982 “Creepshow,” “Creepshow 2” sticks to the same formula with three stories of terror. The first story, “Old Chief Wood’nhead,” follows some punks who tear up an old couple’s store and disrespect the cigar Indian the owner has outside. But the Indian soon comes to life, scalping and violently killing all who hurt his owner. The best story in all the films is “The Raft.” A group of kids travel to a secluded beach to smoke grass, have sex and swim. Once they all swim to the raft, they discover a blob in the water that devours anything in its path. They have to decide to out swim the blob or wait it out. Both films are worth a watch, but “The Raft” makes “Creepshow 2” the winner. CV
