Help beautify the neighborhood

The Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together will have a neighborhood beautification day on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 8 a.m. to noon. Volunteers will meet at Casady School (16th and Jefferson) to register and be assigned projects such as replacing retaining walls, lawn work, home maintenance and weatherization of homes. Bras for the Cause event set

The third annual Bras for the Cause Gala and Auction will take place Saturday, Oct. 3 at the Hy-Vee Conference Center, 5820 Westown Parkway. The event begins at 7 p.m. and includes a silent and live auction, dinner, food, drinks and a dance. Funds raised pay for breast and cervical screenings for Iowa residents who cannot afford them. Celebrate Pope’s visit

Living History Farms will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Pope John Paul II’s visit there on Friday, Oct. 2. The day will include students participating in Catholic School Day, and Dowling Catholic High School students collecting non-perishable food items on behalf of the St. Mary’s food pantry in Des Moines. Food Festival has appetite for volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the U.S. Cellular World Food Festival, which runs from Oct. 7 to 11 in Des Moines’ East Village. Volunteers can assist with activities in the cooking demonstration tent, information booth, production support, set-up and tear-down. Shift lengths average three hours.
