Slipknot’s M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan is celebrating his birthday by hosting the first gallery showing of his acrylic and canvas paintings, framed photography, prints and some of the Polaroids from his upcoming book, “The Apocalyptic Nightmare Journey,” on Thursday, Sept. 24 from 7 p.m. to midnight at the Kirkwood Hotel in downtown Des Moines. Jewelry, paintings and films by other artists will also be displayed. Mike Pfaff and Jeff Karnowski from Crahan’s side project, Dirty Little Rabbits, will perform live jazz music. The Rural Alberta Advantage, born out of singer-songwriter Mils Edenloff’s exodus from the province that inspired the band’s name and many of the songs on its debut Saddle Creek album, “Hometowns,” plays Thursday, Sept. 24 at the Vaudeville Mews at 8 p.m. $10.

“A Night at the Cabaret,” which includes performances by the Des Moines Vocal Arts Ensemble as well as solo and duet numbers in the spirit of classic cabaret, will be held Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Pappajohn Education Center in downtown Des Moines from 7 to 9 p.m. A silent auction and raffle will also be held.
