FILM INDUSTRY NOTES

by Jared Curtis

On Sept. 18, the longest running daytime drama in history, “Guiding Light” called it quits. The CBS show, which began on the radio, ran for 72 years with 15,762 episodes. Over that time, seven characters who were either paralyzed or confined to a wheelchair, miraculously recovered; 15 characters who were killed off, returned from the dead; 10 characters had sexual relations with both a father and son or a mother and daughter (not at the same time); and fan favorite power couple, Reva (Kim Zimmer) and Josh (Robert Newman) married and divorced on three different occasions. A nation of fans (including my mom) will no longer be able to visit the fictional town of Springfield five days a week.
Author Dan Brown’s newest book, “The Lost Symbol,” a sequel to “The Da Vinci Code,” broke first day records last week racking in more than a $1 million in sales. The e-book also posted big sales and is the top seller for Amazon Kindle. The book was so highly anticipated, the publisher had to go back to the press for an additional 600,000 copies, the bringing the printed to more than five million copies.

The 61st Emmy Awards rook place last week. Host Neil Patrick Harris did a decent job and kept the crowd entertained. The biggest winners included “30 Rock,” which took home awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (Alec Baldwin) and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series; and “Mad Men” which won Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.
