Chicago rock band Oh My God returns to Central Iowa to perform Friday, Sept. 11 at 9 p.m. at the Bali Satay in Ames. The band is promoting its new album, “The Night Undoes the Work of the Day,” which includes songs that were written while singer-bassist Billy O’Neill and organist-singer Ig underwent lengthy rehabilitation for severe injuries sustained from a September 2007 automobile accident in which a drunken driver collided with the band’s van. When they play Ames, they will have guitarist Zach Verdoorn and Danny Yost, both from the South Dakota band The Kickback in tow.

The Salisbury House hosts its annual Great Gatsby Gala on Friday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m. The ritzy Roaring 20s bash includes dinner, costumes, music by two big bands and a live auction. Tickets are $200 or $125 for those 35 and under. Call 274-1777.

Westminster Presbyterian Church’s Anchor Coffee House in Des Moines kicks off a new season on Saturday, Sept. 12 with a performance by veteran Iowa one-man-band Patrick Hazell, who plays everything from jazz and blues to classical and Cajun. The Des Moines Symphony, featuring pianist Chu-Fang Huang, performs Saturday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines. Tickets to the symphony’s season opener are $12.50-$51.50. The Des Moines Symphony is also hosting a non-traditional “Bus to Beethoven” party event in which a charter bus takes patrons on an exclusive tour of “five hidden gems” around the city on Sept. 12, concluding with the evening’s concert. Americana singer-fiddler Carrie Rodriguez’s duo performs Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. at Flying Mango. Tickets are $25.

The local chapter of the Des Moines Metro Opera Guild will host a party on Monday, Sept. 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. at West End Architectural Salvage, 22 S.W. 9th St., to celebrate its 38th season. Live music, drinks and hors d’oeuvres are included. The Guild’s new co-presidents, Jared and Emily Hall [Jared of Dueling Pianos fame] will host. Call 961-6221 to RSVP.

Alt-country punks The Weight play the Vaudeville Mews on Wednesday, Sept. 16 in support of their new album, “Are Men.”

Singer-songwriter Trevor Hall will open for Michael Franti & Spearhead Sept. 28 at Stephens Auditorium in Ames. Hall played at the Vaudeville Mews on Aug. 12. Tickets are $30 through Ticketmaster.

Soulfly, Prong, Cattle Decapitation and Mutiny Within play Oct. 12 at People’s Court. Tickets, $18, go on sale Friday, Sept. 11.

Veteran country music singer and Marty Stuart’s wife Connie Smith plays two shows each night at Terrible’s Lakeside Casino on Oct. 23-24.

Rock band Saving Abel plays Nov. 4 at the Val Air Ballroom. Tickets are $22.50.

The “PacTour 2009” featuring Saosin, P.O.S., Innerpartysytem and Eye Alaska play an all-ages show Nov. 17 at People’s Court at 6 p.m. Tickets, $15, go on sale Friday, Sept. 11.

The White Tie Affair, Every Avenue, Stereo Skyline and Runner Runner perform Nov. 23 at 6 p.m. for an all-ages show at People’s Court. $13.

Pianist Jim McDonough plays at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 at Hoyt Sherman Theater. Tickets, $28 - $33, go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 15 through Ticketmaster.
