The Planned Parenthood Book Sale will be held Thursday, Sept. 10 to Monday, Sept. 14 at the 4-H building on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The sale runs from 4 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. Admission is $10 on Thursday and free the following four days. Saddle up for Special Olympics Iowa

Special Olympics Iowa will host its annual State Equestrian Competition on Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Jester Park Equestrian Center, 11171 N.W. 103rd Court, Granger. Approximately 75 athletes from across Iowa will participate in the competition that features seven different events. Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. and competition starts at 10 a.m. Call 986-5520 or visit www.soiowa.org.

 

Not your ordinary golf tourney

Registration is open for the first Annual Area Chamber’s Cow Pasture Tournament, which will be held Friday, Sept. 18 at Griffeon Valley View RV Park. Sponsored by Altoona, Bondurant, Mitchellville and Pleasant Hill Chambers of Commerce, the event will showcase skills on a cow pasture mowed like an 18-hole golf course. Golf carts will be provided along with a meal after the tournament. All team captains must check-in at the registration table no later than 12:30 p.m. Cost is $40 per golfer or $160 for a team of four. Payment must be received by Thursday, Sept. 17. Hope ministries needs volunteers

Hope Ministries is seeking volunteers who will be able to help in a variety of Thanksgiving and Christmas projects. More than 100 volunteers will be needed on both holidays. Volunteers can also participate in off-site opportunities including “Adopt-a-brother,” which provides gifts for 150 homeless men staying in one of Hope Ministries’ facilities. Another opportunity is “Adopt-a-family” where “Hope Boxes” are provided to hundreds of poverty-stricken dads and children on Christmas Day. To volunteer, call 265-7272 or e-mail info@hopeiowa.org.
